Although one of the main health benefits of the external use of water is keeping our body clean, bathing is much more than this and it’s curative properties have been known for centuries.
SPA is the name of a small village in Belgium where the ancient Romans discovered that its hot mineral springs relieved soldiers’ aches and pains from battles.
Our daily bath and shower rituals are, in fact methods of alternative medicine:
The break of the surface tension of the water, by waves, falls or evaporation produces the release of negative hydrogen ions that are very beneficial for our body, which is electro-positively charged.
For many years the spa client associated bathing pools with extravagant and extremely expensive spa retreats where in recent years the public has almost come to expect some sort of bathing facility in most spas. If you think of spending a day at a spa, would you not automatically assume that a pool of some sort be available as a facility?
And since the word SPA means health through water, a bathing pool or some sort of water treatment is a MUST as part of a spa facility.
Lets have a look at different types of water treatments
- Roman Bath. Also known as warm bath or tepidarium. Water heated to temperature of 36 degrees celcius.
- Kneipp therapy pools. The temperature of the skin is usually 33.5°C. Different temperatures generate different therapeutic benefits Cold 13-15°C and Hot 40-46°C. These pools are generally small in size and used as plunge pools.
- Swim Spa. This is a small pool around 3 to 4m length that produces a strong artificial current against which you can swim without moving forward, sometimes referred to as treadmill swimming.
- Hydro/Relaxation Pool. Hydrotherapy pools are bodies of water that are run at a higher temperature than normal pools and also have increased water turbulence such as massage jets and other water features. The temperature is set just about body temperature or above so that you have a warm feeling. The water gives you buoyancy that takes the tension off most parts of the body. The movement and heat of the water in a hydrotherapy pool is enough in many cases to provide therapeutic relief for muscle aches and stress.
- Hot Tubs. A classic hot tub is made of redwood or cedarwood as these woods are naturally resistant to decay and insects and also provides a tactile experience unlike acrylic material. A hot tub is like a big round barrel offering a deeper soak at a depth of about 1.2m. They may or may not include water jets.
- Portable Spa or as we commonly refer to as a Jacuzzi
- Vichy Shower. An overhead shower with multiple shower heads that extend over a person’s body length with hot water that sprays on the body at different pressures creating a type of water massage. Any form of water treatment whether before or after a massage or any spa treatment will enhance that treatment hundredfold. Try incorporate water treatments into your weekly home routine whether it’s swimming, soaking in a hot bath full of Spalicious Soak powder or Spalicious Bath Oils or even alternating hot and cold water in your shower for a few minutes. The benefits to your skin, body and mind will be visibly felt and seen.
